System Integration and Simulation

The research cluster “System Integration and Simulation” focuses on the answering of research questions related to the design of sustainable energy systems on the basis of renewable energy sources and high energy efficiency. The target is to develop 100 % renewable energy supply concepts as well as the construction and analysis of transition pathways from today’s energy systems to a sustainable future system.

Questions of interactions between different renewable energy sources, the integration of different energy storage technologies as well as dispatchable system loads are together with questions of the necessary further development of infrastructure and power grids of central meaning. A special focus point is the opportunity for cooperation with Norway and their available pump storage potential.

In addition to questions of further economic-technical development of energy systems, market mechanisms and economic effects of system changeovers are investigated. Methodologically the simulation model renpass is used frequently for analyzing the electricity system. For the economic part advanced functional input-output analyses are performed.
