Biography

Simon Hilpert studied industrial engineering with a specialisation in energy and environmental management at Flensburg University of Applied Sciences from 2007 to 2011. As part of his studies, he spent a semester abroad at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa in Portugal. He completed his practical semester at the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems in Freiburg in the Energy Technology Department.

From 2011 to 2013, he studied for a Master's degree in systems engineering at the University of Applied Sciences. During this time, he focused on the modelling of energy systems. In his master's thesis at the Flensburg University of Applied Sciences and the Europa-Universität Flensburg, he dealt with the modelling of combined heat and power plants using mixed-integer linear optimisation.

Since 2013, Simon Hilpert has been a research assistant at Flensburg University of Applied Sciences in the Department of Energy and Biotechnology. In the Master's degree programme EUM at Europa-Universität Flensburg, he teaches in the field of energy system modelling.

In his work, Simon Hilpert deals with the modelling and optimisation of energy systems using mathematical programming and open-source tools (Python, Pyomo, MathProg). Among other things, he played a major role in designing and developing the modelling framework OEMOF and the module it contains for optimising energy systems. As part of his doctorate, he is analysing different approaches to modelling future electricity-heat coupled energy systems.
